Geo Heat Controller Fan Wont Continue to Run

1. Hello,

   I just had my climate master tranquility 27 installed the other day and everything runs great. My question relates to the fan. I have the fan set to automatic, but it seems to run nonstop. Is this normal?

   Depending on the outside temperature, the unit might run full time in 1st stage to keep your house warm.

   I did not have that information. The second most common reason is that the thermostat is not wired correctly, so the fan get a constant on signal.

   My vote is for mis-wiring. Fan should not run constantly independently of compressor unless in "on" vs "auto" mode.

   Could be a bum thermostat

6. Fan could be mis-wired...also depending on the thermostat and we don't know exactly what you are seeing on your thermostat screen, there is a way an installer can send a constant "G" (Fan) signal to the fan to test outputs on the CM thermostats.

   Also, I have had one of the new Emerson ECM fan modules come this summer with it mis-programmed, it was doing all sorts of goofy things!

8. The unit is not locked out as I am getting heat. My contractor stated that the fan will run because I have the temp set at 69 and if the temp is at the lower end of 69 (almost 68) the fan will continue to run. When I turn my temp to 70, the fan will shut off for a little while and then do the same thing as above. It just does not make sense that the fan would run this much, but I am new to geothermal heat pumps as I previously had oil heat. I am just concearned that this will jack up my electric bill.

   You need

   to know if it is just the blower running or the whole system.

   Then report back.

10. Its not the whole system as I hear it turn off downstairs and then a colder air will continue to blow out of the vents for long periods with the whole system kicking on periodically.

11. Is this a split or packaged system? I have seen fan coils wired wrong and thermostats too.

    1-ClimateMaster TTV038 3 ton, 2 speed compressor w/desuperheater
    1-ClimateMaster 10kw strip heater
    1-Geo flow FC1 flow center & hose kit
    1-Geo Flow Prime tank
    1-Honeywell PR08000 digital thermostat
    1-80 gal. electric water heater

13. That all looks like good stuff. Has the fan always run continuous? If so I would be looking at wiring diagram, if not I would start looking for a shorted wire.

14. Well Yes and No.

    When I have the temp set for say 70 and the house gets to 70, the heat turns off but the fan will continue to blow cooler air non stop. Now if the temp is still at 70 inside the house and I turn down the temp setting from 70 to 69, then everything will turn off until the house gets to 69, then the fan will turn back on and run non stop with the heat periodically running.

15. Wow it sounds like you need a REAL service tech. I would make sure all wires are in the correct spot before calling, or disconnect tstat and try to wire around the stat to see if it works correctly then. Good luck, I wish I could help more.

    If what you last described is 100% of the running experience - then we are not dealing with a unit lockout or such, but a low voltage wiring problem or thermostat programming problem.

    Thermostat wire is easy to damage

    I never let the electrician run my control wire.

    A Romex type hard staple can make a connection between red and green that will make and break as the wire moves with the change in ambient temperature.

    Long pre and post cycle fan times could cause some of what you describe, but it sounds more like tstat set-up or staging issue (i.e. 1st stage not engaging).

19. Sounds Familiar

    My installer had accidentally switched the Y1 and Y2 wires on my unit. Therefore the fan would come on and run for awhile but we wouldn't get any temp difference until the the second stage was engaged. If you are comfortable using a voltmeter and have experience, check for 24v on the control board's Y1 terminal when your t-stat is calling for Y1. Verify that you are getting 24v on Y1 and Y2 when second stage is engaged. If not comfortable, call a service tech to have them verify that your t-stat is wired/programmed correctly for 2 stage operation.
